10 Lessons From 20 Years in the 21st Century

Not only is 2020 the start of the second decade in the 21st century, but it is also the second decade of my professional career. Experience being the great teacher means I have 20 years' worth of bumps, bruises, and brainstorms. Here is a list of 10 things I wish someone would have told me to save me at least some of the pain of learning them the hard way. Over the next 10 weeks I will expand on each lesson.

  1. Being the most authentic version of yourself will lead to more success than being the best carbon copy of the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time).

  2. When it comes to getting promoted relationships matter more than results.

  3. Live in a way that when you die a majority of the people at your funeral talk about you by more than just the results you produced.

  4. Feedback is only a gift when it is wielded like a tool and not like a weapon.

  5. Perception is reality. Period. No matter how much you want to argue that it isn't fair.

  6. Consume content everyday. And regularly make it something that challenges what you believe or think you know to be truth.

  7. Love wins at work, but it isn’t the soft and mushy kind. Except when it is the soft and mushy kind.

  8. You can never have enough self-awareness, self-control and self-assurance.

  9. The happiest people are the ones who bring the same version of themselves to all aspects of their lives.

  10. Never do for another what they can be taught to do for themselves.
